Co-labouring with God

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building”. – 1 Corinthians 3:9 KJV

Lessons from Beth (Elisabeth, John the Baptist’s mother)

Elisabeth was married to Zachariah and we learn from the couple that it is necessary for us to work with God in order to fulfil His purposes for our lives. Their story is found in Luke 1.

Elisabeth and Zachariah were well advanced in years but they had no children because Elisabeth was barren. They prayed for a child and never gave up nor murmured against God while their prayer remained unanswered.  Zachariah was a priest and while on duty, he was chosen to burn incense in the temple according to the custom of the priesthood.  An angel appeared to him at the altar of incense and brought word to him saying;

Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:13-17 KJV

God had not forgotten His children. He answered the couple’s prayer with a miracle child of old age. John was born and he had a special work to do which was appointed in God’s way. Therefore, God gave the couple instructions on how to raise their son. His learning and training were specific to prepare him for the ministry he was to carry out, in preparing the way of Jesus the redeemer. Elisabeth played a big role in John’s development as a mother. She carried out her duty faithfully in cooperating with God as per His instructions and God blessed her works.

Many times, God has a special work for us but that comes with specific instructions. We need to trust God’s purpose and plan for our lives and act in faith following the instructions He has given us. We usually ask ourselves, “What is God’s will for my life?” Well, God’s will is His revealed principles of life in His word. As God’s children, we are warned against self-indulgence, greed etc. Therefore, ask yourself, are you living in line with God’s principles as revealed in His word? Maybe not, you could be missing out on living the purposeful life that God wants you to live.

Be blessed.
