Presumption (False Faith) Vs Real Faith

Lessons from Peter

“And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.”– Luke 22: 49

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.” – John 18:10

What is it that makes faith different from presumption? The answer is, Faith is relationship-based i.e. There’s communication between the ‘you and God’ and it is based on the word of God. That is where faith draws its certainty.

From the above readings, we see rash behaviour from Simon Peter. Sometimes we as believers are too harsh on Peter and his faith experience but we are certainly not any different. The above experience happened in the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was betrayed and arrested. Our focus for this study will be on what happened due to presumption.

Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, shall we strike with a sword?” Next thing we know, someone’s ear has been cut off. It’s interesting to note that Peter asked a question but didn’t get an answer and yet he proceeded to do what he thought was right to do. This only led to chaos but thank God for His grace. Jesus was interested in the wellbeing of His disciples and so He sorted out the chaos so that no accusation would be made against Peter and all the other disciples.

Often, like Peter, we ask God questions on whether we should do certain things. We ask Him just to prove a point ‘that we have asked’ and yet we are not ready to listen or to wait on His response. This is how we end up causing so much chaos for ourselves. We need to understand that faith is God’s expressed will for our lives. Clearly, it wasn’t God’s will for the man’s ear to be cut but because Peter didn’t wait on Jesus, we can see the results of presumption. Also, he was in defence mode and yet Jesus had taken time to prepare him and His other disciples for this time. They missed it all, they couldn’t grasp why their master would submit to the Officers, Chief Priests and Pharisees. It’s also important to take time and understand God’s word for ourselves. This will be our tool as we stand in faith. Let us not allow our passions to be at war with us but rather, let us trust God and wait on Him even when it seems that He’s taking so long.

Our first step in faith shouldn’t be to do something but to establish something. It will only feel risky if we are not in a relationship with the Father.

All along we think we are living by faith, yet we are living by presumption. Help us oh God!
