The Blessing in Never Giving Up

Written by Nakimera Geraldine Esther – Lessons from Hannah

Hannah was a wife to Elkanah who was a son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none because God had closed her womb. Her rival Peninnah always provoked her to irritate her and this went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and wouldn’t eat. Hannah’s story is found in 1 Samuel 1 – 2.

When l deeply think about Hannah’s story l see how extraordinary she was in handling her trials. Hannah prayed to God without ceasing and year after year, she never stopped pleading with God because she had faith in Him. She also believed that she served a God of impossibilities.

Sometimes, when we have problems we don’t think about God as the only saviour. We tend to remember Him as our last resort after everything, we have tried, has failed. But, Hannah never fought her battles alone.  She knew whom to cry to, the Lord! And no matter how long she prayed, she never gave up yet, it’s our nature as humans to give up because, at some point, we all get tired in the name of at least, “l tried my best” but nowhere in the Bible do we see Hannah giving up. What do you think would have happened if she had given up? Maybe, God wouldn’t have opened her womb.

I also admire Hannah’s humility and endurance because even when Peninnah persistently insulted her, she never insulted her back. She instead, in bitterness, prayed and cried to the Lord. I don’t think l could tolerate all that humiliation Hannah endured.

Elkanah her husband would say to her,Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons? – 1 Samuel 1:8. I can imagine Hannah possibly asking Elkanah, “why did you marry another wife, don’t I mean to you more than another wife and children?” But Hannah never said anything like that, she was patient and endured her hardship. Honestly, I can’t imagine how hard it was for her. Hannah was indeed extraordinary.

Hannah promised God, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.” – 1 Samuel 1:11. When God remembered Hannah and opened her womb, she fulfilled her promise.  “After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.” – 1 Samuel 1:24.

When l try to imagine what Hannah did, I can’t fathom it. I find it impossible for me to put myself in her shoes. Having prayed for so many years for a child and finally, God giving me a son, l don’t see myself taking him at a young age or at even at any age to stay at the temple with the priest to serve God. Yet, Hannah took Samuel to stay at the temple after weaning him. We might not know Samuel’s age then but what we know, he was still too young. God honoured Hannah’s offering and blessed her with other children. “And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.” – 1 Samuel 2:21.

From Hannah’s story, l believe God’s timing is always perfect and He never forgets His people. Today and all the days of our lives, let us pray and ask God to teach us to be like Hannah. To be patient, humble and to have faith in Him. To trust His timing and to pray without ceasing because our human nature tends to get tired but it’s only God who can make us stand out in the crowd

May God bless you!

Great is the faith of those who believe in the Lord, their hearts shall be satisfied.
Hannahs faith is really unimaginable, giving all she had and the Lord blessed her with more.
