What we need is a change of heart!

We are living in a world where we’ve got standards of what is right, or what a nice person is like and how they behave. Human beings have set their standards depending on where they live and their culture but we know that God in His infinite wisdom gave us the standards by which we must live and countless times in His Holy Word, He instructs us to live by those standards. In other words, He reminds us to obey His commandments. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, – 1 John 2:3-4.

Sometimes the standards we set are in line with what God would have us do but even then, we know that doing everything right isn’t enough. A good example is that of the rich young ruler. This young man approached Jesus in humility and asked him “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus mentioned to him some of the commandments and these were specific to his relation with other human beings. The young man replied “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” “And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” The young man walked away sadly upon hearing Jesus’ words. Clearly he didn’t understand the value of what Jesus was offering or let’s say he didn’t value the eternal things as much as he valued his worldly possessions. The young man claimed that he had kept God’s commandments but I think it is clear here that his possessions were his idols and hence he didn’t keep the commandments. He valued his possessions  more than God. From his request, he wanted the heavenly treasures but from his response, he also wanted the temporal worldly ones.

We know that all good and perfect gifts are from the Father. He gives wisdom, honour, wealth, etc and these are for us to advance His Kingdom however, we tend to value the gifts more than the giver and because of our selfish desires, we only want to use these gifts to benefit us and not others. This was displayed by our father Adam, the rich young ruler and now us. When put in positions where we have to choose Jesus Christ and the world, we often go for the latter. We sadly turn away from Jesus  saying we wouldn’t have him as our leader because we feel it is such a great sacrifice to make. But consider Him, God who gave His son, Jesus, who died on our behalf. Jesus became poor so that we may be rich inheriting the kingdom of God with him.

And now all God requires is perfect obedience but He knows that in our sinful nature, we cannot keep His commandments and therefore, he invites saying, “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you, and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My ordinances and do them. – Ezekiel 36:26-27. All the work has been done for us. The only thing to be done on our part is to surrender self. This is a choice for us to make because God will pursue us in love but will not force us to surrender to Him. We also should understand that it is impossible for us to keep God’s commandments without the change of heart which He alone can do. Like the young ruler, most of us lack the love of God in our hearts and yet this is the vital principle.

While there’s time, let us die to self and allow God to give us a new heart. For the message still stands and the choice is left for us to make.  “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.” – Joshua 24:15. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.- Matthew 6:21 We have to choose, we cannot serve God and mammon. Stay blessed!
